Pitfalls in DXA

DXA may be falsely elevated due to the following factors:
  • Aortic calcifications
  • Scoliosis
  • Osteoarthritic changes
  • Compression fractures
  • Enteric contrast
  • Renal stones
  • Bone grafts
DXA may be falsely decreased due to the following factors:
  • Laminectomy
  • Lytic lesions
